What Is a Ball Valve?

A ball valve is a quarter-turn shutoff device that controls water flow through a pipe. Inside the valve, a drilled ball rotates against sealed openings. Turning the handle aligns the opening for flow or blocks it completely. Ball valves are common on water lines because they close quickly and provide clear open or closed positions.

Key Takeaways About Ball Valve

  • A quarter-turn handle gives the valve clear open and closed positions.
  • Ball valves work well as shutoffs on pressurized water lines.
  • A ball valve is not the same as a fixture shutoff valve.

How Ball Valve Works

A ball valve controls water by turning a round ball inside its body. The ball has a passage through its center. When the passage lines up with the pipe, water flows. When the handle turns across the pipe, the solid side blocks the passage.

The handle usually moves through a quarter turn between open and closed. A handle that runs in line with the pipe normally shows an open position. A handle across the pipe normally shows a closed position. Seals around the ball help limit leaks while the valve operates.

During Water Line Repair, a ball valve can isolate a section of piping. That lets a plumber stop water near the work area while other parts of the system remain available. The valve must match the pipe connection and service conditions.

Expert Note

When we inspect a ball valve, we check the handle movement, body, connections, and nearby signs of leakage. We also confirm that the valve fully stops flow before working on a water line. A stiff handle or worn seal can point to a valve that needs repair or replacement.

Ball Valve in Practice: A Real-World Example

A water line repair may require shutting off a section near a leaking connection. We turn the ball valve across the pipe, verify that flow has stopped, and complete the repair with less disruption to the rest of the system.
