What Is a Toilet Wax Ring?

A toilet wax ring is a soft sealing gasket placed between a toilet base and the toilet flange. The ring compresses under the toilet’s weight and closes the joint around the drain opening. This seal helps keep wastewater and sewer gases from escaping where the toilet connects to the bathroom drain.

Key Takeaways About Toilet Wax Ring

  • It forms a flexible seal at the toilet base.
  • A compressed ring helps prevent leaks and sewer odors.
  • A wax ring isn't the same as the toilet flange.

How Toilet Wax Ring Works

A toilet wax ring sits between the toilet outlet and the toilet flange. During installation, the toilet presses the ring against both surfaces. The wax fills small gaps and keeps the drain joint closed.

The ring does not connect to the water supply. A separate supply line fills the tank, while the wax seal protects the waste connection below the bowl. The toilet must sit level and remain firmly supported so the seal stays compressed.

Installers remove the old seal before setting the toilet on a new ring. They check the flange, clean the mating surfaces, lower the toilet straight down, and secure it without overtightening. A rocking toilet can disturb the seal and allow leakage.

Expert Note

When we install a toilet, we inspect the flange and the underside of the toilet before setting a new seal. We check for movement after securing the bowl, because rocking can affect the seal. We also test the connection for leaks before finishing the installation.

Toilet Wax Ring in Practice: A Real-World Example

During a toilet installation, the existing seal is removed and the flange is checked for damage or movement. A new wax ring is placed at the drain connection before the toilet is lowered and secured.
