What Is Water Pressure?

Water Pressure is the force that moves water through supply pipes, valves, and fixtures. The force comes from the public water main, a private pump, or the height of stored water. Pressure affects how strongly water leaves a faucet and whether plumbing equipment receives a steady supply during use.

Key Takeaways About Water Pressure

  • Pressure measures force, while flow rate measures moving water volume.
  • A pressure problem may affect fixtures across the whole property.
  • Low flow does not always mean low pressure.

How Water Pressure Works

Water Pressure moves water through a home's supply system. Water enters through the main line, then travels through branch lines, valves, and fixtures. A pressure gauge measures the force inside the pipe while water is flowing or stopped.

A supply line problem can change pressure at one fixture or throughout the property. A partly closed water shutoff valve may restrict delivery. A damaged pipe, clogged fitting, or failing pressure reducing valve can also change how water reaches faucets, toilets, and appliances.

During water line repair, pressure helps show where a problem may be located. A plumber compares pressure at the main connection with pressure at indoor fixtures. That comparison helps separate a supply line issue from a fixture or valve issue.

Expert Note

When we inspect a water line, we check pressure at more than one point. We look for changes between the main connection and indoor fixtures. We also check valves and visible fittings, since a restriction near one connection can affect the whole plumbing system.

Water Pressure in Practice: A Real-World Example

A home has weak water flow at several faucets after a water line problem develops. We check pressure near the main connection and inside the home to see whether the restriction affects the line or a single fixture.
