What Is a Flapper Valve?

Flapper Valve is a toilet tank seal that covers the flush valve opening. When you press the handle, the flapper lifts and lets tank water enter the bowl. After the flush, the flapper drops back into place and seals the opening. A worn or poorly fitted flapper can cause continuous running.

Key Takeaways About Flapper Valve

  • A flexible seal sits over the toilet’s flush valve opening.
  • A damaged flapper may let water pass after flushing.
  • A flapper valve is not the same as a fill valve.

How Flapper Valve Works

Flapper Valve works by covering the flush valve opening inside a toilet tank. A chain or rod connects the flapper to the tank handle. Pressing the handle lifts the flapper, so stored water flows into the bowl.

After the handle returns, the flapper settles over the opening. Water pressure and the flapper’s shape help form the seal. The fill valve then adds water to the tank. A chain that is too tight can hold the flapper open. Mineral buildup or a worn surface can also prevent a full seal.

Flapper Valve in Toilet Repair

A plumber checks the flapper, hinge points, chain, and flush valve seat. The correct replacement must match the toilet’s design. A poor fit may cause a weak flush or steady tank refilling.

Expert Note

When we inspect a toilet, we check whether the flapper closes fully after the handle returns. We also look at the chain length and the flush valve seat. A new flapper may not solve the leak if the seat is damaged or the handle mechanism keeps tension on the chain.

Flapper Valve in Practice: A Real-World Example

A toilet may run after each flush because its flapper no longer seals the tank opening. During Toilet Repair, the plumber checks the flapper and chain, then confirms that the tank stops refilling after the seal closes.
