What Is Galvanized Pipe?

Galvanized Pipe is a steel or iron pipe coated with zinc to slow corrosion. The coating protects the outer surface, while the metal body carries water through a building. Galvanized pipe was common in older water supply systems, but rust can narrow the passage and reduce water flow over time.

Key Takeaways About Galvanized Pipe

  • Zinc coats the outside of the steel or iron pipe.
  • Rust inside the pipe can reduce water flow.
  • Galvanized pipe is not the same as copper or plastic pipe.

How Galvanized Pipe Works

Galvanized Pipe carries water through a hollow metal tube. A zinc coating covers the outside and slows corrosion on exposed steel or iron. The pipe usually connects through threaded fittings.

Water moves through the inner opening, called the bore. Rust can build on that inner surface, so the opening may become smaller over time. A plumber checks visible pipe, fittings, water flow, and signs of leaks during an assessment.

How It Fits Into Repiping

During whole house repiping, the existing layout helps guide the replacement plan. Galvanized sections may connect to newer materials through approved transition fittings. The condition of nearby valves and connections also affects the work.

Expert Note

When we inspect galvanized pipe, we check exposed sections, threaded joints, valves, and signs of rust. We also consider water flow and the condition of connected materials. For whole house repiping, our team maps the existing lines before planning replacement sections.

Galvanized Pipe in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Kent home may have galvanized pipe feeding several fixtures from one main line. During whole house repiping, the replacement plan can account for restricted sections, worn threads, and the route of each water line.
