What Is Thermal Expansion?

Thermal Expansion is the increase in water volume as water heats. In a closed plumbing system, the added volume raises water pressure because water has nowhere to move. A water heater installation may need an expansion tank to absorb that pressure and help protect pipes, fixtures, and the heater.

Key Takeaways About Thermal Expansion

  • Heat changes water volume, even though the water stays liquid.
  • An expansion tank gives extra water volume a controlled place to go.
  • Thermal expansion isn't the same as water hammer from fast valve closure.

How Thermal Expansion Works

Thermal Expansion happens as water gains heat inside a water heater. The water takes up more space, but a closed plumbing system cannot easily send that extra volume back through the supply line. Pressure can rise inside the pipes, fittings, and fixtures.

An expansion tank provides a small air cushion beside the water heater. The tank accepts some of the expanded water and then pushes it back as the water cools. A pressure relief valve also responds if pressure reaches its set point. During water heater installation, the plumbing layout and pressure controls help determine whether an expansion tank fits the system.

Expert Note

When we install a water heater, we check how the system handles pressure as the tank heats water. We look at the supply layout, pressure controls, and expansion tank connection. Our team also checks that the tank has room to work and that the connections are secure.

Thermal Expansion in Practice: A Real-World Example

A new water heater heats water in a home with a closed supply system. The added volume raises pressure, so an expansion tank gives that water room to move and helps limit stress on the plumbing.
