What Is a Water Heater Element?

A Water Heater Element is an electric heating part inside a storage water heater. The element transfers electrical energy into the water around it. A thermostat controls when the element turns on and off. Electric water heaters may have separate elements for different sections of the tank, and either element can fail.

Key Takeaways About Water Heater Element

  • An element heats water through electrical resistance.
  • A failed element can leave water cold or partly heated.
  • An element is not the same part as a thermostat.

How Water Heater Element Works

A Water Heater Element uses electrical resistance to create heat. Power travels through the metal element, and the element warms the water around it. A thermostat senses water temperature and controls the electrical supply.

Many electric tank water heaters place an element near the top and another near the bottom. The upper element helps heat water near the outlet, while the lower element heats the main tank supply. Mineral scale can coat an element and reduce heat transfer. A damaged element may also trip a breaker or stop heating altogether.

During water heater repair, the circuit must be shut off before the element is checked. A technician can test the element for electrical continuity and inspect its gasket for leaks. The tank may need to be drained before the part can be removed.

Expert Note

When we inspect a water heater element, we check the electrical circuit, thermostat operation, element condition, and nearby connections. We also look for signs of leakage around the element gasket. These checks help separate an element problem from a wiring or control problem.

Water Heater Element in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner reports lukewarm water from an electric tank water heater. During water heater repair, a technician finds that the lower element has failed, so the tank cannot heat its main water supply properly.
